Why have your eyes dilated?

The other day we had a patient in who we had dilated as part of his routine exam, and that afternoon he purchased the winning ticket for the California Lottery. Now he's rich beyond mere words.

But seriously, we like to dilate your eyes in order to provide the most complete retinal exam possible. Without dilation we can get a glimpse of your retina, sort of like looking through a keyhole in a door to look in a room, with dilation it is like opening a door to a room and allows for a complete view of the retina. It makes it much easier to rule out any holes, tears or retinal disease.
